Two minor boys from Upwan who had sneaked out of their homes on Saturday evening to go swimming in a neighborhood lake in Vartak Nagar, drowned, police informed. The bodies were found Sunday afternoon.
According to the police, the boys, residents of Rambaug slums, were playing in their locality till Saturday evening when they decided to go for a swim. The unescorted duo then slipped out of their area and sneaked into a pond in the adjoining air force ground unaware of the perils, said officials.
“When the boys didn’t return home, their parents alerted the police that launched a search operation till late Saturday night but to no avail. The following morning, the police were informed by locals of a body floating in the pond following which they rushed to the spot. The parents identified them based on their clothes lying on the banks. Rescue officials fished out the bodies and handed them over to the Vartak Nagar police that is further investigating the case,” informed a civic official.
“The boys had entered the muddy waters unaware of its depth and got stuck in the slush underneath and drowned,” informed senior inspector Sadashiv Nikam, at the Vartak Nagar police station.
